Elections for the post of Vice President are to be held on August 6. Incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's term ends on August 10. The results will be released on August 6 along with the election. The nomination process will start with the notification and will continue till July 19.

The election process for the post of Vice President will be held on August 6 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The election results will be announced on the same day. Incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu's term ends on August 10 and the name of the new Vice President will be announced just four days before that.

How elections happen

The Vice President is elected by proportional representation. It involves a special voting system called the Single Transferable Vote System. In it, the voters have to cast only one vote but they have to decide the priority based on their choice.

They give preference to their first choice 1, second choice 2 and so on from the candidates appearing on the ballot paper. The new Vice President is to be elected within 60 days of the expiration of the term of the outgoing Vice President.

What is the provision

According to Article 66 of the Constitution, there are a total of 788 MPs in the constituency for the election of the Vice President. It consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha and 12 nominated members as well as 543 members of the Lok Sabha.

Not every vote has the same respect as in the presidential election but every MP has the same respect for the vote, i.e. one. This time the polling officer for the Presidential election will be the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha as, as a rule, the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are one (alternate) polling officer after another. If the present Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha is the Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, then the number of the General Secretary of the Lok Sabha will come up for the election of the Vice President. If necessary, voting will take place in Room No. 63 on the first floor of the Parliament House.
