Rejecting the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) remarks on the arrest of Indian social activist Teesta Sitalwad on Wednesday, she said it was interfering in the country's independent judiciary. In a statement, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the Indian authority has taken action against violations of the law under established judicial rules. Commenting on the remarks of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regarding the proceedings against Teesta Sitalwad, Bagchi said, "The OHCHR's remarks in the Sitalwad case are totally inappropriate and interfere with India's independent judiciary."

Spokesperson Bagchi also said that India is working hard against violations of the law as per judicial procedures. It is misleading to label such legal actions as harassment for the sake of activism. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said it was "misleading and unacceptable" to call such legal action harassment. The OHCHR expressed concern over the arrest of social activist Teesta Sitalwad and demanded his immediate release.

Let me tell you, UN Special Envoy Mary Lollar expressed concern over the arrest of Teesta Sitalwad, saying that the anti-terrorism squad of Gujarat Police has taken him into custody in which I am concerned. Teesta is a strong voice against hatred and discrimination. Protecting human rights is not a crime. I demand their release and the Indian state to end the harassment.
