Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has hit out at raising taxes on everything from food to hotel investments, alleging that the Prime Minister's 'Gabbar Singh tax' is now taking the form of a 'household annihilation tax'.

Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter that the decline in income and employment was at the peak of the rising tide of inflation. The Prime Minister's 'Gabbar Singh Tax' has now assumed the monstrous form of 'Household Destruction Tax'. According to a report, he said, food items, education and hotel accommodation have become more expensive. The former Congress chief called the GST a "Gabbar Singh tax".

Notably, a panel of representatives from all the states and Union Territories, headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has accepted GoM's recommendation to review the GST exemption. Under this, pre-packaged and labeled meat, fish, yogurt, cheese, honey, dried fruits, dried beans, wheat and other grains, wheat flour, jaggery, murmura (muri), all goods and organic manure and coir flour manure are exempted from GST. There will be no exemption and it will now be taxed at 5 per cent.
