AAP defeats CM Mann in Sangrur Lok Sabha by-election in Punjab

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a major blow in the by-elections to the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant following the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Gurmel Singh has lost the Sangrur seat.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) candidate Simranjit Singh Mann has won the by-election to this high profile seat in Punjab. Simranjit Singh defeated his nearest rival Gurmel Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party by a margin of more than 7,000 votes.

Simranjit Singh Mane thanked the people of Sangrur through a Facebook post. Several leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal, including Sukhbir Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Khaira, congratulated Simranjit Singh Mann on his victory.

The seat fell vacant following the resignation of CM Mann

The Sangrur Lok Sabha seat fell vacant due to Bhagwant Mann's resignation. Bhagwant Mane had resigned from the Parliament after becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab. The seat, which fell vacant after Bhagwant Mann's resignation, was vacated last year. Voting took place on June 23.
