Eleven Bihar laborers were killed in a blaze at a scrap godown in Hyderabad early this morning. According to police, the bodies of the laborers were so badly burnt that they could not be identified without a DNA test.
According to police, fire safety facilities were not available in the godown and it was impossible to escape the fire as there was only one narrow staircase. However, a laborer managed to save his life by jumping into the room.
President Ramnath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has expressed grief over the incident. The Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Telangana have also announced the amount of assistance for the families of the deceased.
According to the fire brigade and police, the laborers, who were living on the roof of Bihar, were sleeping in a room above the godown at the time of the incident.
The fire brigade was notified that the fire had started at 7.5 am. At seven o'clock in the morning the fire was brought under control. The workers could not save themselves because there was only one ladder. However, one laborer managed to escape by jumping out of the room.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand said after visiting the spot that the age of the deceased was between 6 and 7 years. The godown contained scrap metal, including newspaper cartons and used bottles. There was no fire safety facility in this godown.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has announced compensation of five lakh rupees each.
