Thane police take Kalicharan Maharaj into custody over remarks on Mahatma Gandhi

Maharashtra's Thane police have taken Hindu guru Kalicharan Maharaj into custody in Chhattisgarh for allegedly making insulting remarks against Mahatma Gandhi. An official of Naupada police station said that Kalicharan Maharaj was taken into custody from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday night. There he was imprisoned in one such case. He is being brought to Thane on transit remand and will be produced in a local court by Thursday evening.

Kalicharan Maharaj was earlier arrested by the Raipur police on December 26 on charges of making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi at a function in the Chhattisgarh capital. On January 12, Maharashtra's Wardha police arrested him in a similar case.

He was arrested from Raipur in connection with a case registered against Kalicharan Maharaj on the basis of a complaint lodged by Nationalist Congress Party leader and Maharashtra minister Jitendra Avhad over the alleged remarks against the Father of the Nation, a Naupada police station official said.

Earlier, on December 19, 2021, Pune police arrested Kalicharan Maharaj in connection with an alleged provocative speech on 'Shiv Pratap Din' program. The event was held to commemorate the assassination of Mughal general Afzal Khan by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
