A stampede at Mata Vaishnodevi Bhavan killed 12 devotees and seriously injured several others


- The families of the deceased will be given assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund

- Relief amount of 50-50 thousand rupees was announced to the families of the injured

Twelve devotees have been killed and 13 others injured in a stampede at Mata Vaishnodevi Bhavan in Jammu and Kashmir. It is learned that the accident took place at around 2:45 pm. According to Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh, preliminary details revealed that the devotees had pushed each other over a dispute and then ran away.

Dr. Gopal Dutt, BMO of Katra Hospital, inquired about the death toll. The injured are being taken to Narayana Hospital for treatment while the condition is now under control, according to police. It was learned that the devotees had reached there on the occasion of the New Year and in the meanwhile there was a sudden stampede.

The death toll could still rise, according to a report. The dead include 1-1 devotees from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and others are in the process of being identified.

After being informed about the tragedy, Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims. He also prayed that God would heal the wounded soon. According to the Prime Minister, he has been briefed on the situation by talking to Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha, Udhampur MP Dr Jitendra Singh and Union Minister Nityanand Rai. The injured have been directed to provide all possible medical assistance and other assistance.

The families of the deceased have been given Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund while the injured have been given Rs 50,000 each. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief over the tragedy at the Vaishnodevi temple and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims.
