Under consideration of 14 proposals for appointment of judges in High Courts

The 14 proposals for the appointment of judges in the country's various high courts are at various stages of consideration before the government and the Supreme Court collegium, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a statement. He gave this information to the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.

He further said that 8 proposals have been sent or returned by the government this year on the advice of the Supreme Court Collegium.

Rijiju said the recruitment of judges to the High Court is a continuous, unified and collaborative process between the executive and the judiciary. He said that as on November 31, 2021, 9 judges were appointed in the Supreme Court and a total of 114 judges were appointed in different High Courts.

In reply to another question, he said that a total of 2,6,8 cases were pending in the High Courts. There are 30,09 cases pending in the Supreme Court. There are a total of 2,3,8,6 cases pending in the lower courts.

There is now only one vacancy in the Supreme Court. While there are 203 vacancies for judges in the High Court. The number of judges approved in the Supreme Court is six. While the total number of judges sanctioned in 8 high courts of the country is 108. A total of 2191 judges are vacant in the lower courts.
