- Every year 13.5 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents, 50 million are injured in the world: World Health Organization report

New Delhi: In the last three years, 3,000 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in the country. More than one and a half lakh people die in road accidents in India every year. About five lakh accidents are reported in the country every year. Millions are injured in accidents.

According to a report by the Ministry of Roads and Transport, 3,000 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in the last three years. Most of these accidents are caused by speeding. However, despite many efforts, the government has not been able to control the overspeed.

According to the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the country suffered a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore due to road accidents. Which is 0.5 per cent of GDP. Of the accident victims, 4.5 per cent were between 18 and 5 years of age. Most of the accidents involved two-wheelers and most of the accidents were due to overspeed.

According to the World Health Organization, 12.5 million people are killed in road accidents worldwide each year. About 1.5 lakh of them were from India alone. Fifty million people worldwide are injured in vehicle accidents.

The reasons behind pedestrians being the victims of accidents were investigated. It found that in most large cities, sidewalks are only nominal.

Vehicles pass through it. Normally the sidewalk should be higher and slightly wider than the road, but due to town planning disturbances, the sidewalk space is allocated very little, which makes it compulsory for pedestrians to walk on the main road and it proves to be dangerous for them.
