JAKARTA: At least 13 people have been killed and dozens more injured in what became known as the eruption of an active volcano called Semeru in Indonesia, the Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Sunday, adding that a dozen people were also injured. Rescuers rescued 10 people trapped in the wreckage and moved them to safety.

Indonesia's tallest Semeru volcano is located in the eastern state of Java, which erupted on Saturday with a huge eruption that was followed by huge volcanic eruptions.

The surrounding villages were surrounded by black clouds, with black debong smoke and plumes of ash rising. The incident triggered a wave of panic in villages near the volcano and people fled the area.

The eruption caused extensive damage to a vital pool connecting the urban area of ​​nearby Lumajang District with other areas. Agency official Abdul Muhari said in a press release issued by the government.

Of the 13 people killed, only two have been identified so far. The death toll from the natural disaster has risen to 98 so far. Rescue and relief personnel rushed to the spot and evacuated 902 people from the affected areas.

The government official said that 10 people engaged in sand mining were trapped during the eruption of the volcano, who were rescued after a great struggle. So far 35 people have been hospitalized for treatment. Jo Lumajang district officials say 41 people were injured in the blaze.
