Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Vardhman will be honored with Veer Chakra today. The announcement was made earlier and today (Monday) President Ramnath Kovind will confer the honor on him. Wing Commander Abhinand shot down Pakistan's F-16 after the Balakot airstrike.

On February 14, 2019, the Pakistani terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out a mercenary attack on a CRPF convoy at Pulwama. The attack killed 40 Indian soldiers. The Indian Air Force carried out an air strike at Balakot, Pakistan on the night of February 26-27 in response to the attack. The Indian airstrikes killed more than 300 militants in Pakistan.

On February 27, the second day of the air strike, the Pakistan Air Force attempted to invade India but was thwarted by the Indian Air Force. Wing Commander Abhinandan Vardhman was flying a Mig-21 at the time with which he smashed Pakistan's F-16.

However, Abhinandan's plane later crashed on the Pakistani border and he was taken hostage by the Pakistani army. Abhinandan was released about 60 hours later by Pakistan under Indian pressure. Abhinandan smashed the F-16 with a Mig-21, which earned him worldwide acclaim. This is because the F-16 was a highly advanced fighter plane built by the United States. The Mig-21 was a 60-year-old Russian-built aircraft. India bought the Mig-21 from Russia in the 1970s.
