No protection till Parambir Singh comes out of 'Ajnatwas': Supreme Court

Former Commissioner of Police, Mumbai

He also refused to hold a hearing

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has categorically refused to grant any protection to former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh until he comes out of hiding. The apex court had asked the IPS officer's counsel to tell the court where Parambir Singh was and adjourned the next hearing of the case till the 22nd.

Supreme Court Justice S.K. A bench headed by Kaul had objected that Parambir Singh was seeking protection through a power of attorney instead of appearing in court in person. The court said you expect a protection order. But no one knows where you are. Suppose you are abroad and seek legal protection through a power of attorney,

In this case, if the court rules in your favor, you will return to India or not, does that mean the same thing? In these circumstances where we do not know where you are there will be no hearing. "You don't know what's going on in your mind," said a bench comprising Justice MM Sundaresh.

Meanwhile, a Mumbai magistrate court had declared Parambir Singh a fugitive. A case has been registered against Singh and other officers on charges of ransom. Parambir Singh last appeared on duty in May. He has no address after that.

Mumbai Police Crime Branch is investigating the ransom case. Despite issuing non-bailable warrants against Singh, the IPS officer, who could not be traced, demanded that he be declared a fugitive. The property of a person declared a fugitive under section 83 may also be confiscated.
