7.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Peru, damages buildings including two mythical churches


A magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook Peru this morning, damaging several buildings. Some roads have been blocked due to debris. The epicenter was 112 kilometers below the ground.

The quake's epicenter was reported at 5.52am, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake had a magnitude of 7.5. A 16th-century church in the La Jalca district of the Amazon has collapsed. Some highways have been blocked by rockslides in Peruna, Amazon and Cajamarca.

The quake was so strong that it shook the region of Lima, 800 kilometers away. Some people rushed out of the house after experiencing the quake. A church was also damaged in the municipality of Loja. Earthquakes are common in Peru and there are frequent tremors.
