6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Assam and Mizoram

Guwahati: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook parts of the Northeast, including Assam and Mizoram, early Friday morning, the National Seismology Department said.

The quake affected parts of West Bengal, the official said, adding that no casualties had been reported so far despite the magnitude of the quake. The epicenter was reported below the Myanmar border, which borders Mizoram, according to the department.

The epicenter was reported at 5.15 am on Friday at a depth of 35 km. The quake affected Assam and Mizoram as well as Manipur, Tripura, Kolkata, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.

However, an official of the West Bengal Disaster Management Department said the quake affected almost all parts of the state. It is to be mentioned that the entire northeastern part of the country is located in a very sensitive seismic zone due to which frequent earthquakes are felt in this area.
