The Supreme Court has reserved judgment on petitions filed for reservation in promotion of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in government jobs. Earlier, a bench headed by Justice Nageshwar Rao heard the arguments of all the parties concerned.

During the hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal, Additional Solicitor General Balbir Singh and other senior advocates represented various states.

The Center had earlier told the bench that it was true that even after seven years of independence, SC and ST people could not be brought into the forward class. The bench hearing the case also included Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice BR Gawai.

Attorney General Venugopal said it has become difficult for people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to get a higher post in the Group A category. Now is the time for the Supreme Court to take a proper decision on this issue.

The bench had earlier said it would not reopen its earlier judgment on granting promotions in jobs to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. It is now up to the states how they comply with the ruling.
