Center directs to curb rising edible oil prices during festivals

Other states will soon impose various sanctions: Central government

New Delhi: Amid ongoing efforts to curb rising edible oil prices during the festive season, the Center on Monday said the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a stockpile of edible oil and other states will soon follow suit.

Central Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey reviewed the stock price of edible oil during a virtual conference with representatives of various states on Monday. The meeting was attended by representatives from 23 states.

The Uttar Pradesh government had set and announced a limit on the stock of edible oil for various categories of traders like retailers, wholesalers, large number of consumers and refiners, Pandey told PTI.

The Uttar Pradesh government has kept the range of edible oil stocks from 1 to 25 tonnes for different categories of traders and it was also announced on October 12. Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana are in the final stages of announcing the editing stocks. These states will also announce limits on edible oil stocks, Pandey added.

According to Pandey, nine other states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Orissa, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and Chandigarh, have agreed to limit edible oil stocks.

However, the rest of the states have also started the process of determining the quantity of stock. Since 2018, different states have set certain limits on stocks of edible oils and oilseeds, so there has been a slight delay in the process, Pandey said.
