Facebook is not succeeding in curbing hate speech: report
Numerous pages mentioning leaders of the ruling party and the opposition were spreading false information during the Lok Sabha elections.
WASHINGTON: An internal report by Facebook has revealed that Facebook is also failing to curb hate speech, fake news, misinformation and violence in India.
A report published by the American media house The New York Times, citing an internal report from Facebook, said that numerous pages referring to the ruling party and opposition leaders were spreading false information during the Lok Sabha elections.
In February 2019, a Facebook account was created in the name of a common man in Kerala by the researchers of Facebook and it was operated according to the curiosity of a common man. This account was operated as a rule for the first three weeks.
Some content containing fake news or hate speech was seen. Then a video was viewed on each page based on the page and group suggestions provided by Facebook and a new page was explored every day.
Researchers spotted a post celebrating the group's hate speech, fakenuza and violence. A separate report conducted after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections revealed that 40 per cent of the top views received from West Bengal were fake or invalid.
In addition, 30 percent of the impressions were invalid. In a report titled Adverse Hammerful Networks: India Case Study, the researchers noted that there are also anti-Muslim pages and groups on Facebook that provide misleading information, most of which came to light during the Corona epidemic.
The New York Times report also mentioned that an extensive report on Bajrang Dal was made by Facebook. In which it has been concluded that anti-Muslim stories are being propagated by this organization.
