Causes of coal shortage in the country

New delhi date. 10

The problem of coal shortage in the country is becoming serious. Coal stocks have declined in most power plants. This problem will have a direct impact on power generation. However, the energy ministry claims that the issue will be resolved soon. The ministry said that after the second wave of the Corona epidemic, controls, including lockdowns, were lifted and demand for electricity suddenly increased as most of the factories opened. As the economy recovers, it is currently consuming 3 billion units of electricity daily, with coal meeting 5 to 20 per cent of its electricity needs. In August-September 2016, the power consumption was 104.5 billion units, which increased to 12.5 billion units in August-September this year. During this period, power generation has increased to 7.5 per cent from 31.31 per cent in 2016. Compared to August-September 2016, coal consumption has increased by 12 per cent in these months this year.

On the other hand, torrential rains in the coal mining area in September have affected coal production and supply. In addition, as the economies around the world improve, the demand for coal has increased and the price of coal has gone up. As a result, declining supply of imported coal has led to increased dependence on domestic coal. The problem is also compounded by the fact that power plants did not stockpile sufficient coal before the onset of the incomplete monsoon. The energy ministry has set up a core management team on August 9 to monitor coal stocks. The team manages the call stock twice a week by inspecting it.
