According to reports, the attacks were carried out with the intention of defaming the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. Violence erupted in the area on Wednesday after an alleged insult to the Koran.
Jamaat-e-Islami has reportedly sparked the controversy. Jamaat-e-Islami is the same organization that chanted slogans like 'Bangladesh will become Afghanistan' after the Taliban took over Afghanistan. It is in this series that the organization is making the youth radical through such slogans. A Dhaka-based ambassador said the October 16 incident was meant to tarnish the image of the Bangladesh government and force India to respond.
