A seven-year-old Indian national has been convicted of involvement in a nationwide tech support refund scam, a US attorney has said in a statement. This Indian was living illegally in Houston.

Sumit Kumar Singh has admitted that he took part in the scam between 2015 and 2020. Singh could face up to 20 years in prison and a 450,000 fine.

He will be sentenced on December 20. Until then, however, he will remain in custody. According to documents presented in court, the victims were deceived using a variety of tactics. He was also instructed to send money through Western Money and MoneyGram.

One such scheme was to provide access to their computers by assuring victims of assistance for technical support. The victims were then told that they had been overpaid due to their mistake and were instructed to pay through FedEx or UPS. It was during this refund process that he acquired the bank account and card information of the victims.
