The BJP sent him to the Rajya Sabha, but he resigned in 2017 and joined the Congress.

There were rumors that Sidhu would become the Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial candidate, but then Jammu did not and he joined the Congress. He was made a minister in the post-election Congress government led by Captain. However he opened a front against the captain and resigned from the cabinet in 2019. Despite the captain's opposition, he was made the region's president and then the captain was removed from power.
