Nine judges, including three women, were sworn in for the first time as Supreme Court judges


In 71 years, only eight women judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court

New Delhi: Justice B.V. Three women judges, including Nagaratna, were sworn in as judges of the country's highest court on Tuesday. As Justice Nagaratna is at the forefront of seniority, he could become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2027.

Before Justice Bella Trivedi, Hima Kohli and Nagar Ratna were sworn in, only eight women judges have been appointed to the country's apex court so far, including incumbent Justice Indira Banerjee.

In the 71 years since its inception in the Supreme Court, which came into existence in 1059, very few women judges have been appointed, meaning that only eight women judges have graced the post of Supreme Court judge. He is credited with being the first woman judge in the Supreme Court. Fatima goes to BB who was appointed in 1989.

The other seven women judges of the Supreme Court include Justices Sujata Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyansudha Mishra, Tanjana P. Desai, R. Bhanumati, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee.

Before Justice Hima Kohli was appointed to the Supreme Court, he was the Chief Justice of Telangana Haiko 4t. Born in Delhi on September 2, 1959, Kohli earned his LLB degree from Delhi University and was the Legal Adviser to the Delhi Municipal Corporation from 1999 to 2004.

Former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court S. Justice Nagaratna, daughter of Venkataramaiah, was serving as a judge in the Karnataka High Court before being appointed to the Supreme Court.

He was also a Gujarat High Court judge before Justice Bella Trivedi was promoted to the Supreme Court. Fatima Bibi, the first woman judge of the country to be appointed to the Supreme Court, was appointed on October 6, 1989 and retired as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 29, 1992.
