More than 90% of farmers in India have an average debt of Rs 5,000

According to the 7th survey released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), more than 50 per cent of farming families are in debt in 2017. Each farming family has an average debt of Rs 4,151. Eight years ago, the average debt of farmers was Rs 5,000. This is stated in the chapter on the situation of families in rural India on September 10. This report includes surveys conducted from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2017.


More than 4,000 farming families were studied to gather this information. However, there is a slight decrease compared to 2016 when such a survey was conducted before 2016. According to the last survey conducted in 2016, the debt of every agricultural family has been increasing. It has increased by an average of 3%. Andhra Pradesh has the highest debt of Rs 3.5 lakh in the data of 6 states. In at least 11 states, the debt of agricultural households was more than the country's average debt of Rs 4,151 crore, including more than Rs 1 lakh on farmers in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
