A suicide note was found, police said, adding that the abbot had been mentally disturbed for some time.
In a seven- to eight-page suicide note, Mahant Narendra Giri Maharaj has leveled allegations against disciple Anand Giri. He said the disciple was torturing him mentally. However, Anand Giri refuted the allegation and counter-alleged that some police officers, including the land mafia, were also involved in the incident. This whole conspiracy has been hatched against me. Guruji did not commit suicide, but I am being deceived by this conspiracy. An impartial inquiry into this issue is essential. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condolences over the death of Mahant Narendra Giri Maharaj. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also sent condolences. Leaders including Amit Shah and Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the demise of the Akhara Parishad chairman. The condolence message was sent from the official Twitter account of the UPCongress. UP leaders have also demanded an inquiry into the suspicious death of Narendra Giri Maharaj.
Police launched a preliminary inquiry. The reports also claimed that Anand Giri, a disciple of Narendra Giri Maharaj, had been detained. Police said the suicide note is being interpreted, after which the next situation will become clear.
