Due to good rains and good paddy production, India's foodgrain production is likely to touch a record 12,050 tonnes in the current kharif season, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

The total production of foodgrains including paddy, pulses and coarse grains in the kharif season of the agricultural year 2020-21 (July-June) is estimated to be a record 12.5 tonnes.

Paddy, sugarcane and cotton are expected to produce record yields. However, coarse grains and oilseeds are expected to decline in the current kharif season.

Presenting the first advance foodgrain estimate for the current kharif season, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the production of foodgrains in the kharif season is estimated to be a record 12,060 tonnes.

He said that behind the record production of food grains was the handiwork of farmers and scientists and the government's farmer-supported policies. According to government estimates, pulses production has increased to 20.5 lakh tonnes in the kharif season of 2021-21. Last year, pulses production stood at 20.5 lakh tonnes.

Tuvar's production is estimated to increase from 20.5 lakh tonnes to 2.50 lakh tonnes. However, production of coarse grains is estimated to fall from 25 million tonnes to 35 million tonnes. Oilseed production is also projected to fall to 31.30 million tonnes from 2.305 million tonnes.

When it comes to cash crops, sugarcane production is estimated at a record 212 million tonnes. Last year, sugarcane production was 35 million tonnes. Cotton production is also estimated to increase to 35 million tonnes. Which was 7.5 tonnes last year.
