Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandez dies at 90



Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Oscar Fernandez has died at the age of 90. Oscar Fernandez had been ill for some time and was being treated in hospital.
Oscar Fernandez had been ill for some time and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangalore. Oscar Fernandez was a Member of the Rajya Sabha. He was a minister in both the terms of the UPA. He was counted among the close leaders of the Gandhi family. Oscar Fernandez was Parliamentary Secretary when Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister.
Born in Udupi, Karnataka in 191, Oscar Fernandez reached the Lok Sabha for the first time in 190 from the Udupi constituency. Until 19, they were elected from the same seat. Then there was the Rajya Sabha MP.
Following the news of Oscar Fernandez's death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a tribute. Modi wrote: I am saddened by the demise of Fernandez. He was a senior leader and made a significant contribution to the politics of the country. I send my condolences to his family.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote in an emotional tweet: "The demise of Oscar Fernandez has caused me personal loss. He was my guide and mentor. An entire generation of us in Congress has been prepared under his guidance. His loss will never be made up.
Oscar Fernandez was injured when he fell while doing yoga. He was then admitted to the hospital. His health had deteriorated since last July.
