Japan warns its citizens of terrorist attacks in six countries

Attacks expected in Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar

Japan's foreign ministry has warned its citizens in six Southeast Asian countries to stay away from places of worship and crowds, saying there was a possibility of terrorist suicide attacks in those countries. The ministry said it had received information that the risk of suicide attacks had increased. This warning applies to Japanese living in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

The warning has caused confusion in countries where such terrorist attacks have been warned. Officials in those countries said they were not aware of any such risk. Even Japan has not given special details of these details.

A Thai police spokesman said Japan had not been told where the information came from. The Japanese embassy also said the warning was not for Thailand. Security agencies are also unaware of any such risk. A spokesman for the Philippine and Indonesian foreign ministries responded in kind.

Japan, in its advice, told its citizens to pay close attention to local news and to be cautious at present. No other details were given as to when the terrorist attack would take place. The Japanese Foreign Ministry declined to comment. He said the advice has been sent to the embassies of the countries concerned from where it will be communicated to Japanese citizens.
