Heroin smuggled from Afghanistan to Iranian port in the name of talcum powder at Mundra port: Couple arrested, remanded

Bhuj: A DRI team has seized drugs worth Rs 10,000 crore from Mundra Adani port. The DRI has arrested the managing couple of Vijayawada's company from Chennai for importing heroin along with a bunch of talcum powder. Machhavaram Sudhakar, director of Vijayawada's Ashi Trading Company, and his wife Govindaraju Durgapurna Vaishali have been granted a 10-day remand to be produced in a Bhuj court today.

The proliferation of heroin, which was expedited by the DRI, is the largest ever and has echoed nationally. Where was the heroin to be taken from Mundra? Who ordered Who provided financial support? The probe has been extended to Mundra, Gandhidham, Mandvi, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Chennai.

A week ago, a team from DRI, Gandhidham, launched an investigation into a container of semi-processed stone talcum powder belonging to Vijayawada's Ashi Trading Company at the Adani port in Mundra, which contained heroin drugs.

During the investigation, 1999.579 kg of heroin was recovered from one container and 988.64 kg of heroin from another container. The total value of 2988.219 kg of drugs recovered from containers imported at Mundra port is expected to touch Rs 10,000 crore in the international market.

A consignment of pure heroin from Afghanistan was sent from the Iranian port of Abbas to a container unloaded with talcum powder from a ship named Interseed at the port of Mundra.

Kalpesh Goswami, Special Public Prosecutor, DRI, said the drugs were ordered from a firm in Chennai under the guise of talcum powder from Afghanistan, which was to travel from Mundra to Delhi. Based on the information, the DRI team at Mundra port has seized a large quantity of these heroin drugs.

After 6 days of investigation, 3,000 kg of heroin has been seized from two containers and the investigation is still ongoing. Govindaraju Durga Purna Vaishali and her husband Machhavaram Sudhakar, a couple living in Vijayawada, Chennai, were arrested on the 17th in the case and remanded in judicial custody at Bhuj's Palara Jail, where they were produced in Bhuj's Narcotics Court today seeking remand.

The court has granted 10-day remand to both so that the DRI team will now travel to Chennai, Vijayawada and Delhi for investigation. It may be noted that the goods were ordered from Afghanistan but as there was no port there, the drugs were sent from Iran to Mundra port in Kutch and were seized. This is the biggest successful operation of DRI so far and now the names of other heads will be revealed.
