The BRO built the world's tallest motorable road in eastern Ladakh

New Delhi: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has built the world's tallest motorable road at an altitude of 12,600 feet at Umlinla Pass in eastern Ladakh, the defense ministry said on Wednesday.

The BRO has built an 8 km long black topped road. It passes through Umalingla Pass. With this, it broke the record of a motorable road built at a height of 12.5 feet on Uturuncu volcano in Bolivia, the ministry said.

The Umalingla Pass connects important cities in the Chumar sector of eastern Ladakh. This will give the locals an alternative route connecting Leh to Damchok and Chisumle. This will improve their socio-economic status and boost tourism in Ladakh.

During the winter, temperatures reach 40 degrees Fahrenheit [-40 સે C], and at 12,500 feet, the oxygen level is 40 percent lower than normal.
