The Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over non-filling of vacancies in the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) despite the commitment. The Supreme Court has told the central government that when you cannot fulfill aspirations then you should not even hope.

The Supreme Court has directed the states and union territories to fill all the vacancies within eight weeks. A bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Hrishikesh Roy has given the Center eight weeks to fill the remaining three vacancies. The apex court has said that the central government has filled only three vacancies and there are still four vacancies to be filled.

The apex court has also directed to study the legal implications of the Consumer Protection Act, 2018. The apex court further said that the government is always in a hurry to make laws but does not study what effect it will have on the people.

The Supreme Court was hearing the Suomoto case over the government's delay in recruiting the president and members of the District and State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and inadequate infrastructure across the country.

Additional Solicitor General Aman Lekhi, appearing for the Center, said the terms of appointment would be as per the recently passed Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021.

The bench said that if you can appoint four out of six then why not appoint three more as one more seat has become vacant since one member retired.
