Government buildings are for active officers, not for retirees: Supreme

New delhi date. 13
The Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment in respect of government housing. The Supreme Court had quashed the Punjab-Haryana High Court's decision that houses could be allotted to retired officers. The Supreme Court clarified that government buildings are for active officers.
The Supreme Court, while hearing the issue of providing government housing to retirees, said that the right to asylum does not mean government housing. Government buildings are for serving officers. Not for retired officers. States cannot allocate such houses to retired officers for philanthropy and generosity. If this is to be done, the government should formulate a policy for it. It is not appropriate to do so without it.
The Punjab-Haryana High Court had granted permission to a retired public servant to stay in government accommodation. The case reached the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice AS Boppana have ordered a retired official to vacate the government bungalow by October 31.
At the same time, the apex court has directed the Center to submit to the court a report on the action taken against such retired employees by November 15 on the order of the high court. The central government has also been directed to provide a list of top government officials living in government houses even after retirement.
