This is news of relief for all the taxpayers who were bothered by the late payment fee deduction. According to the Income Tax Department, any late payment fees, additional interest deducted from those who file returns after July 30 will be refunded.

The Income Tax Department said that this was due to an error in the ITR software and it was fixed by August 1. This error resulted in miscalculation of income tax payers' interest under section 234A and late payment under section 234F after July 30, and the money was being deducted from people's accounts.

What is the whole case

Ever since the Income Tax Department launched a new portal, there have been some new problems. Earlier this month, a new problem arose when the late payment penalty was deducted from those who filed income tax returns after July 31, while the last date of return was extended to September 30.

Normally, the last date for filing income tax returns is July 31, but in view of the Corona crisis, the department has extended the last date for filing returns this year to September 30.
