New Delhi: A bill empowering states to prepare OBC lists for reservations was passed in the Rajya Sabha after the Lok Sabha. The bill will now be presented to the President with whose approval the states will be able to prepare their own OBC list of citizens. States do not have to depend on the Center for this list. The opposition also backed the bill in both houses.

The bill was peacefully debated when it was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. For the second time in the monsoon session, there was no commotion during the discussion. With this the monsoon season was over,

The Lok Sabha, meanwhile, lasted only 21 hours. While only 22 per cent of the work could be done. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla started the proceedings in the morning, adding that the sixth sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha began on July 19, 2021.

Demand in Rajya Sabha to remove 50 per cent limit in reserves

New Delhi: At present, a maximum of 50 per cent reservation can be given. Following which a demand was made by the MPs in the Rajya Sabha to remove this limit. In addition, some MPs demanded that gender-based economic status should be added to the census so that OBC reserves can benefit the right people.

SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav said that if the benefits of the OBC Amendment Bill were to be passed on to the last person, then information on caste-based economic status should be included in the census. It should also cover children's education, pucca building or raw etc. information. He also demanded the removal of the 50 per cent limit for reserves.
