Sher Bahadur Deuba becomes Nepal's new Prime Minister, sworn in as PM for the fifth time

New Delhi, 13 July 2021 Tuesday

Sher Bahadur Deuba has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Nepal. After the Supreme Court's intervention, Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba became the country's prime minister for the fifth time on Tuesday. President Vidya Devi Bhandari made him Prime Minister under Article 76 (5) of the Constitution. After which now Deuba has taken oath.

In fact, on Monday, Nepal's Supreme Court ordered Deuba to be made prime minister. Removing KP Sharma Oli, the court upheld Deuba's claim to the PM's job. "As per the Supreme Court decision, President Bhandari has appointed Deuba as the Prime Minister," Bahesh Raj Adhikari, President Bhandari's personal secretary, told reporters.

The Supreme Court on Monday overturned Prime Minister Olli Rehn's decision to dissolve the May 21 House of Representatives and ordered Deuba to become prime minister. A five-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana said Oli's claim for the PM's job was unconstitutional.
