The railways have been relieved to some extent despite a sharp drop in passenger revenue due to the Corona virus epidemic. In the financial year 2020-21, the railways have earned Rs 3 crore by selling scrap. This is the highest ever, the Railways said in response to a question under RTI.

Earlier, the highest revenue from scrap sales was in the financial year 2010-11. At that time, the revenue from the sale of scrap was Rs 206 crore. The sale of old railway tracks, old coaches, old locomotives in Indian Railways generates scrap income. This has been a significant revenue for Indian Railways for the last few years.

In response to a query under RTI, the Railway Board said that in the financial year 2015-16, the railways earned Rs 3 crore. While in the financial year 2020-21, the income has been Rs. 3 crore.

The railway is going to make the process of selling scrap more transparent. All auctions and financial transactions in railways are done electronically. Due to which there is very little chance of corruption.

All auctions in railways are done through e-auction only. The process of selling scrap is also done in different categories. The Railway Board said in a statement that the scrap sales target for the financial year 2020-21 was set at Rs 2,000 crore. Against which scrap worth Rs 3 crore was sold.

Corona has succeeded in achieving this goal despite the epidemic. In the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21, it was not possible to sell any type of scrap. The highest scrap sales were in the last quarter. In terms of zonal vice, Western Railway sold the most scrap worth Rs 21 crore. Scrap sales target of Rs 5,100 crore has been set for the financial year 2021-2.
