Due to last year's lockdown, air quality in India has improved a lot

New Delhi, 5 June 2021 Saturday

The first lockdown imposed last year in the wake of the Corona has improved air quality in the country’s major cities, while ground temperatures have dropped.

This is according to the findings of a study published in the journal Environmental Research. Evidence from the above findings is that if a large scale environment friendly policy is implemented, it can bring good benefits to the environment.

According to the study, the environment has improved significantly due to the decline in industrial activities as well as the reduction in land and air travel and the decline in commercial activities.

The researchers used data from a range of Earth observation sensors, including the European Space Agency's Sentinel-FiveP and NASA's Modis sensors, to record changes in surface temperature as well as atmospheric pollutants and particulate matter floating in gas.

He focused on six major urban areas, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, to compare the lockdown time data from March to May last year with data from the years before the epidemic.

The study concluded that nitrogen dioxide was greatly reduced. The decline was an average of 12 per cent across the country, compared to 31.5 per cent in the above six cities. In the capital, New Delhi, the decline was 40 per cent. Living in poor quality air in the country alone kills about 16,000 people a year, the researchers said.
