9-year-old Indian man sentenced to death for murder in Dubai released

NRI trader saves Indian national from death penalty by paying Rs 1 crore blood money

Abu Dhabi: A 45-year-old Indian man involved in the 2012 accidental death of a Sudanese child in the United Arab Emirates did not even dream that he would be able to return to India with his family.

Bex Krishnan was rescued from the brink of death by NRI businessman and philanthropist MA Yusuf Ali after paying around Rs 1 crore in blood money.

Since then his family and friends have been constantly trying to free him but to no avail as the family of the deceased had moved back to Sudan and settled there making no discussion for an apology possible.

Finally, in January 2021, the family of the deceased living in Sudan decided to pardon Krishnan, in return for which Yusuf Ali paid 500,000 dirhams (approximately one crore rupees) to the court and released the accused.

Krishnan, who was speaking to Indian embassy officials at the Al Watba prison in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, was emotional when he learned of the incident and could not believe it.

Krishna said that this liberation is like reincarnation for me because I had given up the dream of seeing the outside world. Now my only wish is to visit India once before visiting my family and thank the one who released me once. He also thanked the authorities in Dubai.

Meanwhile, all the legal process for Krishnan's release was completed on Thursday and he will soon return to his family in Kerala and end his and his family's nine years of torture, an official said.
