'Yas' turned into a severe hurricane, Kolkata airport was closed


- Kolkata High Court cancels hearing of all cases listed on May 26 and 27 in view of hurricane

Hurricane Yas, which originated in the Bay of Bengal, took the form of a very severe storm on Tuesday. According to the meteorological department, the storm is likely to hit the port of Dhamra in Odisha's Bhadrak district on Wednesday morning. It will last for about 6 hours before and after the hurricane hits.

In view of the hurricane, the Kolkata High Court has canceled the hearing of all the cases listed on May 26 and 27. The matter will be heard by the concerned bench in the coming days. Employees who do not reach court on both days will not be considered absent.

The decision to close Kolkata airport has been taken since Wednesday morning following warnings of a hurricane in West Bengal. Due to the hurricane, all flights at Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport will be suspended from 8:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the meteorological department, the storm will hit the coast of Odisha with winds blowing at 130-140 kmph by noon on Wednesday.

Direct impact on 8 states

Heavy to very heavy rains are expected in West Bengal and Sikkim for the next 3 days due to the Yas storm. Rain is expected in Jharkhand on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and in many parts of Bihar on Thursday. The meteorological department has also forecast light rains at several places in Assam and Meghalaya on May 26-27. Similarly, heavy rain warning has been issued for several districts in northern Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in the south.
