The new law is proving to be effective in curbing the rising divorce rate in China. The new law has led to a 70 percent drop in divorce rates in China this year. According to figures released by the civil ministry during the current week, 2.96 lakh divorce applications were received from across the country in the first three months.

While last year its number was more than one million. The Chinese government enacted a new law to prevent couples from falling apart and to increase the birth rate in the country. The new law stipulates a cooling off period of 30 days for couples applying for divorce.

Its main objective is that during this period, both the parties resolve the internal differences and take a decision in a cold mind so as to avoid breaking up the home-family. Some people consider the law a positive initiative but some citizens also criticized it as an interference in personal life.

What is the new law

The new law gave divorce the form of a multi-stage process. The first thing to do is to seek counseling from a marriage counselor. They are given 30 days. After that period, the couple has to go to the local civil case bureau and re-apply for a divorce. Failure to re-apply within 30 to 60 days will result in dismissal of the divorce application.
