Steroids behind mucorrhoea, the most dangerous cause for diabetes and covid patients

New Delhi, Saturday 15 May 2021

The director of AIIMS Delhi, Dr. Randeep Guleria, during a press conference on Saturday, discussed the situation of black fungus or mucorrhoea infection spreading during the second wave of Kovid-19 epidemic.

Dr. Guerrero said the mucorrhoea (black fungus) is also found in soil, air and food. However, they are weak and do not usually infect. He said there were very few cases of this transition before Kovid. But now a large number of cases have been reported due to Kovid.

Dr. Randeep Guleria said that at present 23 patients suffering from this fungal infection (mucaramicosis) are undergoing treatment at AIIMS. Of those, 20 patients are still infected with the corona virus and the rest have recovered from the infection. He said that more than 500 cases of mucorrhoea have been reported in many states of the country.

The biggest cause of black fungus is steroids

The director of Ames said the black fungus can affect the face, nose, eyes or brain, it can also impair vision. It can also spread to the lungs. The biggest reason behind this is steroids. People with diabetes and corona and taking steroids are more likely to become infected.

Hospitals need to follow protocol

Dr. "Cavid-19 infection cases are on the rise, so the most important thing is that we start fully complying with the protocols of infection control in hospitals," Guleria said. Dr. Guleria said it has been found that second infections (fungal and bacterial) are causing more deaths.
