Gujarat-Diu loses Rs 7,500 crore due to hurricane

Other states, including Gujarat, are estimated to have lost Rs 15,000 crore due to the catastrophic storm.

According to an English newspaper report, the above estimate has been made in the report of a firm of global consultants working in the field of natural disasters as well as climate change. The states affected by the hurricane included Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. However, the hurricane hit the coasts of Gujarat and Diu and caused the most damage.

The total loss in all the states affected by the cyclone is estimated at Rs 15,000 crore and it is estimated that 50 per cent of the damage was in Diu and Gujarat. According to Castor, about 50 per cent of the damage has been done to the agricultural sector. 15 to 20 per cent losses have been seen in the transportation sector. The rest of the damage has been done to coastal ports, utility sector as well as power and telecom sector.

Thousands of acres of farmland in Gujarat have been devastated by storms and heavy rains. More than 2 lakh trees have been uprooted in all the states. 17000 houses have been damaged. In Saurashtra, Gujarat, 75 per cent of the mango crop has been ruined. Cultivation of millets, mugs, groundnuts, chickpeas and papaya has also been severely damaged.

It may be mentioned that PM Modi conducted an aerial inspection of Gujarat yesterday and announced Rs 2 lakh assistance to those who lost their lives in the hurricane and Rs 50,000 assistance to the injured.
