Corona crisis: 1000 tonnes of wood used for cremation of 3,000 corpses in Bangalore in last 15 days

Bangalore, Friday 15 May 2021

In the last 24 hours, more than 41,000 new cases of corona have been reported in the state, while 373 patients have died. The death toll is steadily rising, with a direct impact on cemeteries. Cremation is still going on in many cemeteries in Bangalore and this is the reason why the 4-month timber stock for cremation has run out in just 15 days.

About 1000 tons of wood was used for cremation in the last 15 days. Since May 1, about three thousand three thousand people have died from corona in the city. 1 to 1.5 acres of land was used for cremation at Tawarkar Cemetery in South Bangalore, but it has now been increased to 4 acres. About 50 to 60 bodies are cremated here every day.

Often the family leaves the bodies and in such cases, the bodies are cremated by the local administration. Sheds are being cremated here even during the rains by constructing sheds. Tokens are given for cremation in the crematorium and the bones of the deceased are given to the family members of the deceased from this token number. However, the distribution of these tokens has also started online from Saturday.
