Compensation to the families of those who died from corona: SC sends notice to Center

- Seeking directions to record corona virus as cause of death in death certificate or other official documents

New delhi date. Monday, May 24, 2021

The apex court on Monday heard a public interest litigation seeking Rs 4 lakh grace to the families of those who died of the corona virus infection. During the hearing, the apex court also sent a notice to the central government on the issue. The court questioned whether the government had a uniform policy for corona sufferers in a petition seeking a similar policy on the issuance of death certificates for people who died from Covid-19.

Demand reply within 10 days

The apex court had sent a notice to the Center on the issue and sought a reply within 10 days. The PIL seeks that the court direct the state governments to record the corona virus as a cause of death in death certificates or other official documents.

Pointed out to adopt the same policy

During the hearing, the Center was directed to make available information on ICMR guidelines for issuing death certificates to people who have died from Covid-19.

The next hearing is on June 11

The bench said that unless there is an official policy or a uniform policy of disclosure of death certificate stating that the cause of death was Kovid, the family of the deceased could not claim compensation if there was any such plan. The bench had asked the Center to clarify its position and fixed June 11 for the next hearing.
