The president of the African country of Chad, Idris Debbie Itano, has been assassinated. Idris Debbie, who has served as Chad's president for more than three decades, was assassinated on the battlefield. Chad's army announced his death on national television and radio on Tuesday.

According to a report presented on national TV, President Idris was seriously wounded while leading the army in retaliation after a rebel attack and later died. He has been the President of this Central African country for more than 3 decades.

He was elected President of the country for the sixth time in the recently concluded presidential election. Following the president's death, Debbie's 37-year-old son, Mahamat Idris, will now lead an 18-month transitional council. A night curfew has been declared across the country since 6:00 pm, according to an army report.
