Adar Poonawala, CEO of Serum Institute of India, has been given 'Y' category protection by the Central Government. They will be given this protection all over the country. The notification was issued by the Union Home Ministry on Wednesday. Under this security cover, 11 security personnel will be deployed, including one or two commandos.

One of the two vaccines currently being vaccinated in the country is Covishield. The Kovishield is manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India. Adar Poonawala is its CEO. The Serum Institute is the world's largest vaccine manufacturer. Prakash Kumar Singh, director of government and regulatory work at the Pune-based Serum Institute, wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on April 16 seeking protection for Poonawala. The central government has since taken this decision.

In his letter, Singh said Poonawala was receiving threats from various groups for the supply of corona vaccine. He also said that we are working shoulder to shoulder with the Government of India under the energetic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The government has decided to provide security to Adar Poonawala at a time when the third phase of corona vaccination is starting from May 1. Earlier today, Adar Poonawala had reduced the price of corona vaccine for state governments.
