Parliament wanted to make GST easier for citizens, but failed to implement it: Supreme Court

New delhi date. 7 April 2021, Wednesday

The Supreme Court has slammed the government over GST in the country. Expressing displeasure over the method of applying GST, the apex court said that the country's parliament wanted GST to be easy for the citizens, but the manner in which it is being implemented across the country is losing its purpose. At the same time, the apex court said that the taxpayer cannot deceive any trader or industrialist.

The apex court said this while hearing a petition challenging a section of the Himachal Pradesh GST. Section A of the Himachal Pradesh GST Act 2017 was challenged which said that while the proceedings of any case are pending, the officer can seize other assets including the bank account if he so desires.

The Supreme Court expressed displeasure over the manner in which GST was implemented in the country. The court said it was deviating from the structure and purpose of GST set by Parliament. The decision has been reserved after today's hearing. The court will decide on this at the next hearing.
