West Bengal: Swapnadas Gupta was given a ticket by the BJP, find out what is the reason?

- Mahua Moitra raises issue of disqualification of Dasgupta's Rajya Sabha membership

New delhi date. Tuesday, March 16, 2021

The Trinamool Congress and the BJP have been at loggerheads over the Bengal Assembly elections. The BJP has fielded Swapna Dasgupta, a Rajya Sabha member and a big face in Bengal politics, as its candidate for the Tarkeshwar assembly seat in Hooghly district, which the TMC is opposing.

The BJP on Sunday announced the names of 26 candidates, including Swapna Dasgupta, for the third phase of polls in West Bengal on April 6. But now the All India Trinamool Congress is preparing a special resolution to end Dasgupta's Rajya Sabha membership.

Dasgupta is a nominated member of the upper house and TMC MP Mahua Moitra was the first to raise the issue of Dasgupta's candidature, citing his position as per the provisions of the 10th Schedule to the Constitution of India.

"Swapna Dasgupta is the BJP's candidate for the West Bengal elections," MP Moitra tweeted. According to the 10th Schedule of the Constitution, if a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha takes oath and joins a political party after the expiry of his term of 6 months, he will be declared ineligible for membership of the Rajya Sabha. He was sworn in in April 2016 which is still ongoing. He should now be disqualified from joining the BJP.
