New delhi date. Sunday, March 28, 2021

The Kejriwal government has come forward to protect couples who have inter-caste or inter-religious marriages or unmarried couples who are being opposed by their family, local community or khap from harassment and persecution.

The Delhi government has directed the formation of a special cell to protect such couples from harassment and provide security. An SOP has also been declared in the matter. According to a circular issued by the Delhi government, the government will provide accommodation to such couples in its own 'safe house'.

The Special Cell will be the 24-hour helpline on the existing toll free helpline number 181 of the Delhi Women's Commission. Couples in interracial or inter-religious marriages who are in trouble will be able to register their complaint on this number and they will be provided necessary assistance.

The telecalls handling the helpline have been trained to handle such calls. They have knowledge of essential services that can be provided as help or advice to a couple facing a crisis. In addition, telecallers can be further trained to manage such calls if required.

Callers' information will be kept confidential

In the same way that the information of women in distress is kept secret, the information of such callers will also be kept secret. After the call is received, first the young man and the young woman will be confirmed to be adults and then the DCP will be informed. The DCP will check the details of such couples and inform the DM about the need to deliver them to the safe house. The couple will also be made aware of the risk and will be kept safe until the issue is resolved. If they do not want to live in a safe house, security will be provided on the basis of threat perception wherever they live.
