Fire at Kolkata's New Koylaghat building, 9 killed, railway ticket booking service affected

The fire broke out on Monday on the 13th floor of the New Koylaghat building on Strand Road in Kolkata, West Bengal. The accident killed nine people and affected the railway ticket booking service as the building housed the Eastern Railway office. The fire caused the Passenger Reservation Service (PRS) server to be cut off so that the fire could be contained as soon as possible.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal expressed grief over the tragedy and assured the state government of all possible help from the railways. A total of nine people, including four fire department employees, two railway employees and an ASI, were killed in the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Arriving at the spot, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and a job for a family member. He also alleged that the building belonged to the railways and that the railways had not provided a map of the building.
