A village where only women live, men are also banned from entering

Kenya, Ta. 26. March 2021 Friday

Amid talk of changing the male-dominated society, there is a village in the African country of Kenya where women are predominant.

We may not be able to imagine such a village but it is a fact. Men have no entry in a village called Umajo. There are a dozen families but there are all women and not a single man. About 31 years ago this village was founded by 15 women. Jane Nolmongen was raped by a British soldier and her husband kicked her out of the house after learning of this. She then arrived in Umoja village with her children, where no man could go.

Now the land on which this woman is cultivating is going to be in her name. In Kenya, 98% of the land is in the name of men only.

All the women living in this village are women who have been evicted from their homes, sexually harassed or evicted from their property. Women who have run away to avoid child marriage have also come and settled here. It was performed by a woman named Rebecca Lolosoli, who opposed female circumcision. She was then attacked by a group of men.

While receiving treatment for her injuries, Rebecca came up with the idea of relocating this village. This village has become a reality today. The houses and schools here have also been built by women. The women of the village make a living by selling handicrafts and honey.
